The first weeks in Paraguay: a checklist for the newcomer
19.10.2026
In brief: In the first few weeks, you need to submit documents for Residencia Temporal, have them translated into Spanish by a local translator, wait for the Cédula, and then obtain a tax ID (RUC) and open a bank account — all using the Cédula. Processing for Residencia Temporal usually takes 2–3 months.
Moving is not just about status, but also about a dozen everyday tasks. Here is a sequence of actions that helps you not to waste time.
Checklist in order
- Submit documents for temporary residence (Residencia Temporal). The application must be submitted in person, so you need to start immediately upon arrival.
- Translate documents into Spanish. Only translations by a certified translator within Paraguay are accepted — translations from home will not work.
- Wait for the decision and receive the Cédula. Processing usually takes 2–3 months.
- Obtain a tax ID (RUC) and open a bank account. Both steps are done using the Cédula.
- Resolve everyday issues: housing, communications, shopping. Separate guides on these topics are being prepared in the "Immigrant's Guide" section.
Tip
While temporary residence (Residencia Temporal) is being processed, do not delay preparing for the next step: you can apply for permanent status 90 days before the current one expires.
